This day is yours! Normally we would define Me Day as a day to get those nails done, get those jeans, cook that food you like, reunite with that friend you miss, give that hug, a day for you to spoil yourself! Instead, today, Christmas Eve, we'll say that it's a good day to put all your intention and attention on what you truly want to see in the world and go BE it. So, Me Day then becomes a day to have all your You-ness show up in the world!
For many people the "Spirit of Christmas" is all about giving and receiving, and unfortunately it's been incredibly commercialized. It's sad that even Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Santa Claus* were made up by companies (Montgomery Ward and Coca-Cola respectively) to attract little kids to their products. These of course won the hearts of America and now they are Christmas staples. But doesn't it also feel like a distraction from what this holiday is really about?
In most Christian countries Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus (Yeshua). So the Spirit of Christmas is all about the qualities that he brought to the world with his birth. People do their best to live in that spirit. They light a candle each Sunday in December (Advent) and each one has a specific focus/intention for that week. They forgive the transgressions of the year that ends, they let go of resentments and grudges, if only for that day, so they can all enjoy a day of peace, joy, and love. They spend Christmas Eve with their loved ones connecting, sharing a feast, placing "Baby Jesus" on the manger in their nativity at midnight, and afterwards exchanging gifts. And the season is observed until January 6th (day of the Three Wise Men).
The Christmas Truce during World War I, in 1914, is when German and British troops temporarily stopped fighting on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. They sang carols and patriotic songs together, played football (soccer), exchanged gifts and opened gifts from home, they lit lanterns and displayed them on their trenches, took pictures with each other, repaired their trenches, and even buried their casualties. It was a day of peace, in the middle of a gruesome war.
That's the effect that one man had on the world. Why not you? After all, that was his message! He didn't say "love me, adore me, pray to me, memorize scripture, tell others to follow it and judge those who don't". He came to show us what's possible for humanity, to be the example to follow. He wanted us to BE like him "I am the way, and the truth, and the life...". Big shoes to fill, huh? Well, it's not that you have to perform miracles! But what if focusing on what you want to see in the world as your inner compass to guide every thought, word, and action just for today, would make an impact on every person you come in contact today? Wouldn't that be worth it?
What if those people you inspired today chose to not yell at their employees today? Or chose not to hit their spouses when they got home just for today? Or maybe not punish their kids this time? Or maybe they finally quit drinking? And then what if those employees, spouses and children also make better choices? How far do you think the chain could extend? How would it feel to know that YOU could have such an impact? So, you see? Maybe you can be like him. Maybe, just maybe, that's why Christmas is celebrated all around the world, to remind ourselves that we can be like him.
- Now, we could even take the conversation outside of Christian beliefs, and include Hannukah, Kwanzaa, and even Pagan Yule traditions. They all have some things in common with Christmas: 1. Light in the Darkness, 2. Community and Togetherness, 3. Reflection and Renewal 4. Feasting and Festivities, 5. Gifts and Generosity, 6. Connection to Nature and its Cycles. These holidays may differ in origin and meaning, but they all share focus on light, community and hope during a time when the days are shortest (Winter). It's a beautiful example of humanity finding ways to celebrate and connect through shared experiences, letting go of the hurt of the past, to create space for a new beginning. -
So with all this in mind, are you ready to make Me Day a day to change the world by shining your light? By connecting with friends and family? By clearing the space for a new beginning? By celebrating love? By sharing generously? By connecting with nature? Imagine the effect this whole day could have on the world by you influencing those around you this way?
And why not make 2025 Me Year? Why not carry all the beauty of this day into every day for the next year? So that every morning when you wake up you set your intention of what you want to see in the world, then spend the rest of the day letting all your thoughts, words and actions be guided by that vision. What would you like to see in the world at the end of the year by doing that every day?
At Ayni Holistic Healing, we hope you'll rise up to this challenge, have fun with it and enjoy this day to the fullest with joy, peace, and love! And we send love and healing energy your way.
In Ayni,
*The image of Santa Claus as we know it today (friendly, fat, rosy cheeks, red suit, etc.) was created by Coca-Cola to boost their sales in the 1930's. But the character was already a legend all over the world as Sinterklaas, Kris Kringle, Papá Noél, St. Nicholas, etc. and their physical appearances varied from country to country.
