The question above has plagued humanity for as long as we have existed. In fact, in the book "Sophie's World" by Jostein Gaarder, the main character, 14 year old Sophie, is challenged in the beginning of the book by a letter she finds in the mail, that only reads: Who Are You? This is the beginning of her quest to find that answer and as a result she goes through a fantastic journey around the greatest philosophers in history!
So now we bring the question to you. Who are you? Are you your name? Your name is the one you respond to, but it's not who you are. Let's pretend you had been adopted, and later in life you find out your biological parents actually named you something different, does this new information about your name change who you are?
Are you your body? If you gain weight, lose weight, or change your hair style, does it change WHO you are? It may change how you feel about yourself, but your essence, the YOU that lives in your body does not change regardless of what happens to your body, does it? It's still you, the only thing that changed is the vehicle that you reside in. So no, you're not your body, you have a body. And guess what, you are not your illness either! It's not who you are. If you're not your body, then you're also not the illnesses that may be affecting it.
Are you your thoughts or beliefs? This one may be harder to separate for some people. You have thoughts and beliefs (T/B). But most people find their identity in the thoughts and beliefs they have. And they want to be RIGHT about those T/B, because they have attached themselves to them. So the moment they meet someone who disagrees, they feel personally attacked and their EGO feels threatened! This is why conversations about religion and politics can get so heated.
Unfortunately, there are politicians and religions who take advantage of this and say things like "The other party wants to destroy [insert something of yours]" or "They want to take away your religion", etc. And they create the fear that most affects you on a core level. So, because it is attached to your identity, the EGO jumps up to protect itself.
Imagine if the current political parties all of a sudden said "We are now going to all become one party; the Purple People Party!" and all of the issues are now going to be addressed under one simple interpretation of the law. If you were attached to your political party, what would you do? Who are you now?
Or what if the leaders of Judaism, Buddhism, Catholicism/Christianity, Paganism, etc. all got together and pieced their beliefs together into one main spiritual belief and they called it the Law of Love. So that from now on, there is only one belief system, and it is based on all the world beliefs combined. If you are your religious beliefs, who are you now?
And what about your feelings and emotions? Are you your feelings and emotions? To find this answer first we need to get clear on where they come from. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, in his book Your Erroneous Zones explains that our feelings and emotions are only the result of how we perceive an event. We perceive said event based on our thoughts, beliefs, and opinions.
For example, if you were going to have an abortion, those who are Pro-Life would condemn you while those who are Pro-Choice would support you. The event or situation is the same, the only thing that generates a different response or emotional reaction in other people is the way they perceive it based on their beliefs. - We're not saying anything about who's right or wrong, We're simply illustrating two opposing emotional responses to the same input.
Now, each one of us has a different perspective on things based on our past history, lessons, learned philosophies, etc. Does that mean you are your past? No, you have a past. Your past experiences are simply lesson opportunities. We learn, we grow, we move on to the next lesson. Your past was never meant to be carried as a life sentence. You made mistakes in the past? Learn the lesson and grow from it, staying attached to it as if that's who you are will simply keep you from growing. You can't move forward in the monkey bars if you don't let go of the old rung.
So if the way you feel about something is based on your perspective, and your perception is based on your past experiences, and you're not your past either. Then you are also not your feelings and/or emotions. You experience feelings and emotions.
Are you your profession? Or your income level? So many people are bound by this notion. You can see them specifically when they have a title they deem important and they want everyone to address them by that title. For example, if you call for Mr. Smith and they respond with "DOCTOR Smith". We have had the privilege of working with people of walks of life and all income levels, and when they have removed all their clothes, jewelry, expensive watches, wigs, etc. everybody looks the same. - Which also illustrates that you're not your clothes or brand names.
So then the question remains... if you're not your name, you're not your body or its illnesses, you're not your thoughts or beliefs, you're not your feelings or emotions, you're not your past, then WHO ARE YOU? We'll give you a clue, you are the one behind the eyes reading this email... You are the one feeling your feelings, thinking your thoughts, experiencing life in this beautiful body.
